We decided in 1994 that a challenging adventure in the most beautiful Clare Valley would be our tree change, on our 400 m hillside, with its spectacular northerly vistas.
We planted fifty acres of vines between 1995 and 2000 including alternative varieties Pinot Gris, Nebbiolo and Viognier. At that time these were little heard-of varieties in Australia.
We opened Scarlattis cellar door art gallery in 2001 along with The Retreat and launched our Mt Surmon Wines label a year later.
The richness of our lives on the mount comes from what we do and how we do it in our freelance world of enquiry and invention.
