Just 10 minutes drive from Clare township the secluded hill top setting relaxes business day tensions. Dissolve into peacefulness as you drive up the country lane to the Mt. Surmon residence on a hilltop at 400 metres. The residence, gallery, cellar door and functions room blend into an unusual built form with a lovely gallery terrace. Tucked away underneath is the guest suite studio apartment – just for two. Large windows overlook the hillside vineyard and the northern Clare Valley with a most magnificent vista of the Flinders Ranges. The Retreat at Mt Surmon Wines consists of a generous sized studio apartment with luxury private en suite bathroom. A king size bed or two singles are available. Outside there is a large shaded private terrace with chiminea.

As you lie in the bed or soak in a bath of clear sparkling rain water, there is always the peaceful country scene and sky to contemplate – whether it’s drenching rain, shrouded fog or plain old summer sun, the scene is always spectacular. Words start to flit by – relax, enjoy, discover, indulge.

The buildings are contemporary functional. Modern appointments, Designer Guild fabrics and a challenging colour scheme put The Retreat in a class of its own. For winter warmth there is reverse cycle air conditioning, electric blankets and a chimenea on the private terrace for romantic starlit nights.
The township of Clare is only 10 minutes drive away and all of the Clare wineries are within a 30 minutes drive. It is very easy to spend days wandering from one boutique winery or eatery to another. You can talk in depth with winemakers and chefs or breast the bars of half a dozen pubs at knock-off time to chat with vineyard workers on the attributes of one vineyard compared with another or one vintage, or grape variety of whatever. Alternatively, you can contemplate our Clare Valley Art Trail or our Church and Cemetery Trail and if you have energy to spare then walk or cycle the famous Riesling Trial. The Surmons are happy to act as your hosts, to cook you an indulgent breakfast if you wish or to prepare an equally indulgent dinner – served in your suite, on your private terrace, in the gallery or on the main terrace.
